Of course, I failed and got destroyed by my own song! In front or everybody! I don't think I made it past the first 30 seconds. After trying to tell the people that failed the song they just need more practice, they handed me the guitar. I walked over to see one of our producers getting his butt kicked by the song followed by several people debating whether or not the song was too hard. I remember hearing a big commotion in the QA room the first day we got. I have to admit, the Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits Theme is pretty difficult. IGN: What is the toughest song for you to play on any of the Guitar Hero games? Are there any songs you can't complete on Expert? Willey: Well, there are a few. Also, the crazy note patterns on hard and expert can be good to build up finger strength/independence. The average GH player is completely aware of the beat - and you have to be if you don't want to fail every song! I remember when we first started getting World Tour drum kits around the studio, nobody could keep a beat, but by the end of the project almost everyone on the team could - and some of them were pretty good! If someone can play drums on Hard or Expert, they can definitely jam out on a real drum set. It's not the kind of rhythm that will make you the funkiest dude in town, but is more of an awareness of rhythm. For a non-musician, Guitar Hero instills a sense of rhythm. Being able to rock out some original music for a theme song is also extremely rewarding! IGN: How does the experience of playing a music video game like Guitar Hero translate to playing actual music? Do any skills carry over? Willey: Absolutely! Rhythm is probably the most important crossover skill, and it goes both ways.

It's been a lot of fun… and sometimes we get a little carried away! IGN: What was the most rewarding part about working on Modern Hits? Jason Willey: Seeing people enjoy something you worked so hard on always gives me an awesome feeling. Over the last few months we've been writing and recording all of the music in Mii Freestyle, which lets players create music and sound like a guitar fiend with just a few button presses. The jams during the Mii Freestyle for Guitar Hero 5 recording sessions are always fun.

Things have been pretty busy lately, but we always find time to squeeze in a jam. We have nutty synth guys, soulful vocalists, funky bass players, metal head drummers, all kinds of guitar players and an awesome audio director that keeps us on point. We have a pretty big team with all kinds of amazing musicians. Then one thing led to the next! IGN: Who else at Vicarious Visions is involved in music projects? Do you guys play music together at work? Jason Willey: Everybody in the Audio Department is involved in some kind of music project at one time or another. It must have paid off because I was asked to make a full-length version of the song. IGN: Did you have to pitch doing the theme song for Modern Hits, or did you just do it and see what happened? Jason Willey: We wanted to go with the modern hits vibe of the game, so with this theme we went with a more modern verse/chorus/bridge (etc.) song structure with guitar melodies on top (but don't worry - there is plenty of shred!). I do the guitars and programming and he cranks out the drums. The core band is just me and my brother Matt, who also works at Vicarious Visions. It came about through my fascination of music, the guitar and the universe. – Protoshredanoid come about? Jason Willey: ProtoShredanoid is my best attempt at what an alien guitar god would sound like shredding through outer space.
